We even have a sneaky alternative if baking really is not your cup of tea – a pre-made gingerbread house! With this Gingerbread House Kit, you can have bundles of fun assembling and decorating your gingerbread house without the larger task of baking. However, if you’re looking for more of a home-made challenge, then pop on your baking apron and assemble the below ingredients.

What you will need for the best Gingerbread House Recipe:

  • 250g unsalted butter
  • 200g dark muscovado sugar
  • 7 tbsp golden syrup
  • 600g plain flour
  • 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • 4 tsp ground ginger

For Decoration:

  • 200g flaked almonds
  • 2 egg whites
  • 500g icing sugar, plus extra to dust
  • 125g mini chocolate fingers
  • generous selection of sweets of your choice, choose your own colour theme

Method:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Next, mix together the butter, sugar and syrup in a heated pan until they are melted together. Sieve the flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger into a mixing bowl, and then stir in the silky butter mixture to make stiff dough. If it’s slightly tough, add a tiny splash of water to loosen up the mix.

  1. Find a Gingerbread house template online and print this out to use as a guide when creating each piece. Roll out the dough onto a sheet of baking paper to about half an inch of thickness. Using a knife carefully cut out the shapes according to your house template. You should be left with two side walls, a front and back wall and two roof panels.

  1. Grab your bag of flaked almonds and carefully stick them in the roof pieces to make lovely roof tiles. Bake all the sections for 12 mins or until solid. When you take them out, leave them to cool completely and then trim down any rough edges.

  1. Now it’s time to build your gingerbread house! To make a quick but delicious icing, put the egg whites in a mixing bowl, then gradually sieve in the icing sugar whilst stirring to make a thick fluffy icing. Add this mix to a piping bag and line thick lines along the wall edges. Carefully, join the walls together and use a bowl to support the walls from the inside whilst they dry for a couple of hours.

  1. Once the walls are securely dry, take away the bowl and assemble your roof panels. This tricky angle can mean that you may need to hold these panels on firmly for a while until the icing becomes more solid. Allow this structure to entirely dry overnight.

  1. Now you can begin decorating your ginger bread house however you wish! Let your imagination run wild as you get to sticking on chocolate fingers, gummy gems, chocolate flakes, and marshmallows…the options are endless!
