The spooky season is almost here! Days are getting shorter and the temperature dropping. It’s finally time to start planning your Halloween parties and finding the best costumes!

There's no need to splash the cash on new Halloween costumes every year, especially if you're on a tight budget. Why not make your own homemade DIY Halloween costumes for you and your kids? It’s perfect for creating a unique Halloween costumes at a fraction of the price, plus the kids will love getting involved in the process.

1. DIY Ghost Costume

DIY ghost costumes have been so popular for years.It’s no surprise when they're so easy to make.Homemade ghost costumes are usually made from materials that are already around the home, which is a huge bonus.

All you need to make a homemade ghost costume is an old white bed sheet, scissors and a marker pen. For small kids, a single white bed sheet should do the trick and for taller kids, you may need a double sheet.

Start by cutting the white bed cloth to size and ensure your kid is happy with the length.

Next, mark the eye holes with a marker pen whilst the sheet is still over the child, this makes the eye holes a lot more accurate and then cut them out.

For an even more spooky effect, cut jagged triangles at the edges of the eye holes.

Make sure to wear white clothes underneath, so nothing stands out through the sheet and ruins the illusion of a ghost! .

 

 

2. Homemade Scarecrow Costume

A homemade scarecrow costumes is perfect for toddlers, kids, even adults! With this DIY outfit, you should be able to find most of what you need at home, like a checked shirt, dungarees and cowboy hat.

If you don't own these clothing items, try checking your local charity stores before buying brand new. 

Fancy putting your sewing skills to the test? Add a few patches made from old clothes to your homemade scarecrow outfit.

Complete the DIY look by stuffing your sleeves and pockets with straw!

3. DIY Bat Outfit

DIY bat costumes are perfect if you're stuck for time as they can be made in a matter of minutes!. Plus, nothing is more spooky than a homemade bat!

For this spooktacular getup, you'll need black fabric, to create flexible bat wings and a headband to make bat ears. 

Complete with a long sleeve black top and trousers.

 

To make the bat wings -

Step 1. Place your chosen black long sleeve on top of your chosen bat wing fabric.

Step 2. Cut the bat wing fabric roughly to fit the span of underarm to waist.

Step 3.  Cut a scalloped edge on the outer wing area to create a bat wing effect.

Step 4. Either sew or glue your wings to the sleeve and body of your long sleeve top.

 

To make the bat ears - 

Step 1. Cover a black piece of A4 Card in glue and cover both sides of the paper with black felt.

Step 2. Cut a bat ear shape out of the felt covered card.

Step 3. Use this ear as a template for another ear, and then cut another ear shape out. 

Step 4. Attach the ears to your chosen black headband with glue.

 

 

4. Homemade Spider Halloween Costume

DIY spider costumes are an affordable and simple way to be the spookiest kid at the party this Halloween!

Similar to the bat outfit, you'll need all black clothes for this one, including a black beanie hat and some black gloves. 

The key feature of this DIY outfit is the spider legs, which are made by stuffing long trouser socks.

This outfit does require some stitching to put it all together, so a needle and black thread is also needed.r. Check out this step by step method to creating the scariest DIY spider costume - 

 

Step 1. Grab your black trouser socks, or knee socks and stuff them with newspaper, plastic bags or any other soft materials that don’t weigh a lot.

Step 2. Tie the ends of the socks so that the filling is secure and can’t spill out. 

Step 3. Attach your socks to the black jumper or long sleeve t shirt, placing 2 of the stuffed socks on each side under your arms. 

Step 4. Sew a small piece of thread from each leg to the one next to it, then to the sleeves of your shirt or jumper, this means when you move your arm that all the spider legs will move as one. 

Step 5. Pop your gloves and beanie hat on, then your DIY spider costume is complete!

5. DIY Pumpkin Costume

Pumpkin costumes are super easy for beginners with no sewing required, you can create this DIY creepy costume in just 15 minutes. Perfect for any last-minute costume dilemmas.

All you need is a long orange sweatshirt or dress, plus some black fabric you can cut into to create a pumpkin face.

 

Step 1. Draw your pumpkin face shapes out on your black fabric, use a white pencil, so it’s clear.

Step 2. Cut your shapes out of the black fabric and place them onto your orange garment. 

Step 3. Glue your shapes to your orange garment and leave to dry.

6. Home Skeleton Outfit

Nothing gets you more in the Halloween spirit than a spooky skeleton. This homemade costume is perfect for both boys and girls!. 

You'll need a long-sleeved black top and trousers, combined with a roll of white duct tape to cut your bone shapes. 

 

Step 1. Draw on your duct tape using a bone shape.

Step 2. cut your white duct tape into the shape you have drawn out. 

Step 3. Stick your bone shapes duct tape onto your black long sleeved top and trousers

 

For an alternative to white duct tape, you can use white chalk or temporary paint, This will wash out of clothes afterwards, making this DIY outfit very sustainable for future Halloweens!. Finish off your homemade skeleton outfit with some white face paint to complete the look.

If you don’t want to use clothes for an affordable skeleton costume, you can always use a black bin bag. Cut a hole in the top of the bag and two at the sides for armholes. Then, paint or draw on your skeleton bones, super easy and cheap!

7. Homemade Mummy Costume

A DIY Halloween costume doesn't get much easier than a loo roll and white clothing. These are all you need to create your homemade mummy look, you can even use bandages for a stronger hold. 

Wrap the toilet roll or bandages around your torso, arms and legs, either secure with glue or a few safety pins. 

Complete the DIY mummy costume with some black circles around the eyes for that un-dead look.
