How to Remove Mould from Your Windows

Black mould build up on your windows is the last thing you want to see. Not only does it cause damage to your windows, but it can also cause health problems if it’s not dealt with efficiently.

The first thing to do, is to try and find out why it has appeared. Then you can go about finding ways to remove it and also prevent it happening again. Mould in all forms is bad for your health but black mould in particular which is known as 'Stachybotrys Chartarum’ is especially dangerous as it signifies that there is excessive amount of moisture in the air.

It is important to act fast when you notice even the smallest sign of black mould around your windows. Typical causes of black mould in homes are the following:

  • Damaged roof or window frames
  • Old heating system
  • Leaking pipes
  • Rising damp
  • Old and non double glazed windows

Why does black mould form?

Two of the main contributing factors to black mould forming on or around windows is leaks and condensation.

If there is water coming in from the outside then its possible that the window frame is damaged or need replacing all together. Condensation can be helped by reducing the amount of moisture in the air around your windows. There are a number of things you can do to prevent condensation from occurring:

  • Replace single pane windows or old double glazed windows with new ones
  • Make use of extractor fans in the kitchen and bathroom
  • Place house plants away from the window as they release moisture into the air
  • Use dehumidifiers to remove moisture from the air
  • Keep home well ventilated by opening the windows from time to time

How to remove it?

Make sure you’re wearing rubber gloves and that the window is open to create plenty of ventilation. Ensure that areas such as carpet, flooring or fabrics are covered/removed from the area before starting for prevent any damage.

  • Mix up one part bleach and 3 parts of warm water in a bowl
  • Using a non-abrasive brush or cloth to clean off the mould
  • Using the cloth, dip it into the bowl regularly and thoroughly clean the whole area
  • Finish off by drying the surface with a cloth
  • Leave the window open until the window is completely dry
